fOR Mercedes SL (R230), CLK (A209), SLK (R171)
All functions of this module can be adjusted according to the user's needs:
Function 1 - Workshop/Diagnose mode. Makes the chip invisible to diagnostic tools.
Function 2 - One-Touch operation for the center-console roof button.
Function 3 - Roof control by remote control with One-Touch operation.
Function 4 - One-Touch windows up and down by remote.
Function 5 - Unlock doors automatically when key is pulled.
Function 6 - Chirp on lock (1 short beep) and optionally on unlock (2 short beeps).
Function 7 - HomeLight XL.
Function 8 - Daytime Driving Lights (SLK & CLK only).
Detailed function description (* = Factory Setting):
Function 1 - Product Enable - Workshop/Diagnose Mode ( 0=OFF / *1=ON / 2=NO HAZARDS )
When disabled, the module becomes completely inactive and behaves as if it was not installed. This is useful if you need to take the car to the dealer or garage for inspection or repairs. The module can not even be seen by and does not interfere with the Mercedes workshop tester. For well known reasons we still have to suggest uninstalling it completely if you are not sure about your dealer's policies on aftermarket installations.
Setting 2 disables blinking of the hazards during remote operation.
Function 2 - One-Touch for the roof button ( 0=FACTORY / *1=ONETOUCH / 2=DELUXE[!] )
When enabled, the center console button operation is enhanced as follows:
Holding down the button in either direction will operate the top as long as the button is held.
Tap OPEN 1x to open the roof completely and roll all windows down.
Tap OPEN 2x slowly (1 sec interval) to open the roof and raise the front windows.
Tap OPEN 2x quickly (like a mouse double-click) to automatically lower windows (SLK) / raise windows (CLK,SL).
Tap CLOSE 1x to close the roof completely and raise all windows up.
Tap CLOSE 2x quickly (like a mouse double-click) to automatically raise windows (SLK) / lower windows (CLK,SL).
When set to setting 2 (Ignition off allowed), it is possible to turn the ignition off and pull the key out, while the top operation continues. It is also possible to get out of the vehicle and lock the doors using the LOCK button, while the roof is closing.[!] USE WITH EXTRA CAUTION!
PLEASE NOTE: On CLKs model year 2004 the roof can be operated while driving, but not using the "one-touch" feature. This is due to the way the roof button is directly wired to the roof controller on this model only.
Programming the max speed for top operation while driving:
While driving at the desired speed, press and hold the phone "end" button on the steering wheel until you hear an audible confirmation. The speed limit can be programmed from standstill up to 35mph (60km/h) on the hardtops (SLK/SL) and up to 25mph (40km/h) on the softtop (CLK).
Function 3 - Remote top operation ( 0=OFF / *1=ON / 2=DELUXE[!] )
This function allows roof operation with the original remote using the RF signal. This works on cars with and without the IR receiver and allows for a much greater range than the close range IR solution.
Tap UNLOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to open the roof.
Tap UNLOCK on the remote 4x (in 1 sec intervals) to open the roof and leave windows up.
Tap LOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to close roof and windows.
While the roof in in motion, the hazard lights flash as a warning signal (unless disabled by function 1). Tapping either LOCK or UNLOCK button on the remote will interrupt the operation immediately.
When set to setting 2 (Ignition on allowed), it is possible to turn the ignition on and start the engine, while the top operation continues. [!] USE WITH EXTRA CAUTION!
Function 4 - Remote window operation ( 0=OFF / *1=ON )
This function allows window operation with the original remote using the RF signal. This works on cars with and without the IR receiver and allows for a much greater range than the close range IR solution.
Tap UNLOCK on the remote twice (in 1 sec intervals) to open both front windows completely.
Tap LOCK on the remote twice (in 1 sec intervals) to close the front windows completely.
Tapping either LOCK or UNLOCK button on the remote will interrupt the operation immediately.
Function 5 - Automatic power locks ( 0=OFF / 1=LOCK ONLY / *2=KEY OUT / 3=IGNITION OFF )
This function can be set to automatically lock the doors when driving (setting 1) and additionally unlock the doors automatically, when either the key is pulled from the ignition lock (setting 2) or when the ignition is turned off (setting 3).
Function 6 - Chirp Sound on lock/unlock ( *0=OFF / 1=HORN L / 2=HORN L+U / 3=SIREN L / 4=SIREN L+U )
This function can be set to either chirp once when locking the car (setting 1) or additionally chirp twice when unlocking (setting 2). Setting 1 and 2 use the regular horn, setting 3 and 4 use the alarm siren (requires factory alarm with red "panic" button on the remote fob).
SLK: To enable the horn chirps, open the fuse box in the right corner of the engine compartment and reseat the fuse shown from position 43A, left slots (1) to position 43B, right slots (2). This change does not affect anything else.
NO fuse needs to removed and NO fuse needs to be added. Just RE-SEAT one already existing fuse.
Function 7 - HomeLight XL ( *0=OFF / 1=FOG / 2=DIPPED BEAM )
This function turns the headlights on for 30 sec., when either the PANIC button on the remote (if present) is tapped briefly or the OPEN button is tapped once while the car is already open (or CLOSE button while the car is already closed). To turn the light off manually, just tap the button again. Setting 1 activates the fog lights and setting 2 activates the regular dipped beams as the light source.
PLEASE NOTE: On the SL this function always uses all turn signal lights.
Function 8 - Daytime Driving Lights ( *0=OFF / 1=FOG / 2=LOW BEAM )
Enable this function to turn the fog lights or headlights (low beams) on as soon as the engine is started. Some countries require the front lights to be permanently on.
PLEASE NOTE: On the SL this function DOES NOT work and the setting is ignored.
WARNING: This function ONLY ACTIVATES THE FRONT LIGHTS !!! You have to make sure that you still turn the light switch if you drive at night, since this function will NOT activate any rear lights or dash board illumination!
This module is equipped with our unique installation help and status indicator LED.
The LED signals a correct installation and shows the status of the module in a clear and easy to understand way.
Ignition OFF: CAN bus and module are in low-power standby mode. This is normal.
Ignition ON: Either power connection or CAN bus connection is interrupted. Troubleshooting: Check the two wire taps for 12V and ground as well as the CAN connectors. Also make sure the CAN polarity is correct.
LED permanently ON
Ignition OFF: Should not happen! CAN bus and module should enter standby mode after max. 1 min. The LED MUST turn off at some point.
Ignition ON: Module is connected to CAN and power, but not in line with the correct CAN plug. Troubleshooting: Starting with the first CAN plug, hook the module up to each one of the plugs until the LED shows a distince blinking pattern (1x per sec) max. 5 sec after turning the ignition on.
CAN Bus is active, the module is connected correctly and ready for use.
Installation on RHD (UK, Australia etc.) cars:
This section only applies to SLK. All others just "mirror" all locations during installation.
On right-hand drive SLK there is no 12V power wire in the harness. Open up the side panel of the dashboard next to the light switch. Also it is advisable to remove the accelerator pedal by unscrewing a 10mm nut located under a plastic cover. This will greatly simplify lifting the carpet. Carefully pry the light switch out of the dash to easily reach the wires. Inside the dash, right behind the light switch is a wire harness with one or more plain red wires. Tap into one of these wires with the crimp connector. The grounding point is conveniently located right behind the bonnet release lever.
This module is equipped with an interactive setup menu to allow easy setting of the desired options.
All programming is done by using the steering wheel buttons (1,2,3) and the two green turn signal (indicator) arrows. Functions are indicated by the left arrow (4) and their settings by the right arrow (5). Additionally, the main cluster display shows all functions and options in clear text (where available). Navigation is done by pushing the up and down buttons on the left (2) or the phone pickup and hang-up buttons on the right (2) and settings changed by pushing the plus and minus buttons (3). Each time either a new function is selected or a function's setting is changed, the blinker arrows will indicate the new status by first blinking the function (left arrow) and then the setting (right arrow).
To enter programming mode, first make sure the key is not in the ignition lock and all doors are unlocked. Insert the key into the ignition lock and turn it to accessory position. To access the clear text setup, make sure the radio/command unit is turned OFF, then select the AUDIO screen using the steering wheel MENU buttons on the left. Next, press and hold the phone hang-up button on the steering wheel until the left arrow blinks once to indicate function 1. Now let go of the button.
From this point on you can navigate through the options by either tapping the UP (next function) and DOWN (previous function) buttons or the phone pickup (next function) and phone hang-up (previous function) buttons. Once the arrows are finished indicating the function and setting, change the setting by tapping PLUS or MINUS. The new settings are active immediately.
To end programming mode, remove the key from the ignition lock or turn the ignition on. End of programming mode is indicated by both arrows lighting up simultaneously.
Function 3 (Remote roof control) is set to allow ignition on (setting 2): Left arrow blinks 3 times to indicate function 3, then right arrow blinks twice to indicate that this function is set to setting 2.
Function 4 (Remote windows) is enabled (setting 1): Left arrow blinks 4 times to indicate function 4, then right arrow blinks once to indicate that this function is set to setting 1.
Function 5 (Auto Unlock) is set to OFF (setting 0): Left arrow blinks 5 times to indicate function 5, then right arrow does not blink. This indicates that the function is set to setting 0 (OFF).
When the module is ENABLED (active), function 1 will be indicated as ON (1x left arrow followed by 1x right arrow). The DISABLED (invisible for diagnostic tools) mode will be indicated as 1x left arrow only.
In case the left arrow is finished blinking and the right arrow does not light up at all, the appropriate function is set to setting 0 / OFF and hence disabled.
1. ALL MODELS (SLK shown):
Move the seat all the way back first, then firmly grab under the plastic cover with both hands (on the inside) and pull up hard. The cover is held in place by the brackets marked with the red circles. For installation on right hand drive cars, please see RHD section on page 2.
Two torx screws hold the side panel in place. One on top and one in the middle/side of the panel. Pry out the little oval cover over the one in the middle, then unscrew both of them. Take the side panel out by pushing it outward (left) and down. Pay attention to how it interconnects with the other parts, so you can re-install it correctly later.
CLK: One T20 torx screw under a plastic cover
SL: One phillips head screw under a plastic cover
Pull up the carpet all the way along the left side. Beneath it there is a black wire harness box. It's cover is held in place by plastic tabs (marked with red circles). Unclip the tabs and pull the plastic cover up.
4. SL and CLK:
On the SL and CLK the harness box is located a bit further up in the footwell. After removing the side panel, pull up the carpet as shown. Unclip the the cover (it is held by plastic tabs on the sides) and pull it upward.
A wire harness with two connection points (terminal blocks) becomes visible. You will need to work on the one closer to the front of the car, so take it out of it's holder and pull it up.
6. SL and CLK (SL shown):
One green and one brown wire harness connection point (terminal block) will become visible. You will need to work on the brown terminal block, so take it out of it's holder and pull it up. It may be necessary to carefully pry it out with a screwdriver, as shown. Just stick the screwdriver between the bracket and the terminal block while pulling up on the terminal block.
7. ALL MODELS (SLK shown):
PLEASE NOTE: The plastic bracket must be removed, before any plugs can be pulled out. It is held in place by two tabs on the sides. Push the tabs outward while simultaneously pulling the cover piece upward or stick a screwdriver between the bracket and the terminal block and carefully pry it off. It is a bit tricky to get off, so please be patient and don't use brute force. With the cover gone, the plugs can be removed. The following step explains in detail, which plug needs to be removed.
8. Disconnect Plug (SL shown):
Disconnect the plug which occupies the third socket from the right. As a reference, the plug occupying the fourth socket from the right should be the only one carrying a brown and brown/black wire pair. See InstallAID™ section on page 2 for help.
Locate the only brown and brown/black wire pair and disconnect it's plug.
CLK MY 2004:
Locate the only brown and red wire pair and disconnect it's plug.
CLK MY 2005+:
Locate the only brown and brown/grey wire pair and disconnect it's plug.
9. Because of the module's universal compatibility and different pin-assignments used by Mercedes Benz, all modules are shipped with just the blank pins on the ends of the wiring harness, along with the needed plastic caps. Insert the pins on the module wire harness into the supplied plastic caps according to your car model. The positions on the plastic caps are clearly marked with "1" and "2". The long thin pins go into the bigger one of the two caps. Top half (SLK, CLK) RED wires go in position 1, BLACK wires go in position 2. Bottom half (SL) BLACK wires go in position 1, RED wires go in position 2. Push the pins into the correct position hole in the cap, making sure it locks into place with an audible "click". After inserting all pins, push the plastic latch on the side of the plastic caps in. It also locks into place with an audible "click". Now the plugs are ready for the next step.
10. ALL MODELS:
Replace the plug just pulled with the one from the smartTOP and insert the plug into the smartTOP's socket, completing the electrical circuit with the smartTOP "in between". The original Mercedes wires are brown and have a stripe on only one of the wires. Double check by following the wires between the module and the plug / the terminal block, that the original Mercedes wires with stripes are connected to the RED wires on the module.
11. Attach the wire taps (SL shown):
SLK: THIN PLAIN RED wire (+12V) and BROWN wire (GROUND) behind hood release lever.
CLK: RED wire with WHITE STRIPE (+12V) and BROWN wire (GROUND).
SL: RED wire with PURPLE STRIPE (+12V) and BROWN wire (GROUND).
SL RHD (UK, Autralia, etc): RED wire with GREEN STRIPE (+12V) and BROWN wire (GROUND).
These taps are removable and only leave minimal traces, which usually stay unnoticed.
12. ALL MODELS (SL shown):
Place the smartTOP module inside the harness box as shown. Connect the plugs to the wire taps and make sure they sit tight. Turn ignition on and check the LED on the module. A slow flashing pattern shows that everything is connected correctly. If it stays lit constantly or does not light up at all, check the InstallAID™ section on page 2 for help. Close the lid and make sure all tabs snap back in place. Replace carpet and side panel. Make sure you snap the side panel in place correctly, as there may be tabs that interconnect with other plastic parts of the dash or the hood release lever cover parts. Replace screws and plastic cover. Installation is complete.
